Course introduction:
Updated for 2026, this Visit Leader training course is designed to equip staff with the key requirements to become a competent Visit Leader. The course provides a firm foundation for those leading educational visits of all types, including overseas travel, residential stays and adventurous activities.
Visit Leader Training is focused on active risk assessment and group management on educational visits and offsite activities, and is primarily aimed at staff leading visits; however, it is open to all school/college staff.
What does the visit leader course cover?
- Benefits and perceived barriers of offsite visits;
- Planning, leading and evaluating off site activities and visits;
- Group management and supervision;
- Risk assessment
- Policy compliance.
The course content is informed by our Educational Visits Advisory Panel, which includes advisers with current professional accreditation, including individuals who hold personal accreditation with OEAP/AAOLEV.
Who should attend the visit leader training?
This course is aimed at new and existing Visit Leaders in all schools (maintained, Independent Schools, Foundation Schools, and Academies) where the employer has agreed that this is suitable.
Although many of the subjects are transferable, this course is not aimed at FE and HE settings.
How is the visit leader training delivered?
This two part course course is delivered as:
- Part 1 - Principles of Visit Leadership - self directed e-learning (1.5 hours)
- Part 2 - Practicalities of Visit Leadership - Live facilitated session via Zoom, delivered by an Educational Visits Adviser (1.5 hours)
Together both parts form formal Visit Leader Training.
Our live online training courses are taught in real-time, allowing you to have a direct dialogue with our experts, a high level of interaction with the other attendees and lots of opportunities to ask questions - just as you would in a real classroom.
All you will need is an internet-connected computer, laptop or tablet with a webcam and microphone.
Before you book, you can check that you meet the Zoom system requirements and run a diagnostic test to ensure the software is compatible with your firewall settings.
Certification
Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of the course, accredited by the Institute of Outdoor Learning.
